Hester......A changed woman?

How has Hester changed after 7 years? What has her A come to mean? What has she lost and gained? How does she feel about Pearl? about being a woman?

  1. Hester has become more active in society. She brings food to the doors of the poor, she nurses the sick, and she is a source of aid in times of trouble. She is still frequently made an object of scorn, but more people are beginning to interpret the “A” on her chest as meaning “Able” rather than “Adulterer.” She is no longer a tender and passionate woman; rather, burned by the “red-hot brand” of the letter, she has become “a bare and harsh outline” of her former self. She has become more speculative, thinking about how something is “amiss” in Pearl, about what it means to be a woman in her society, and about the harm she may be causing Dimmesdale by keeping Chillingworth’s identity secret.

  2. Hester has come out a lot more. She has been more helpful and non-caring about the cursed letter on her chest. People still think that she is bad, and Pearl should not be in her care, but Pearl did nothing. With her keeping her babies daddy a secret, it keeps with her throughout. She is still her true self by keeping the secret of Dimmesdale between her and him.

  3. Hester is a lot more socially active. Her "A" is still looked down upon, but with slightly less disdain. She still loves Pearl, and she doesn't mind being a women.

  4. Hester has become more welcomed in the society and not such an outcast as she once was when Pearl was first born. She kind of has lost most caring though. She is just "chilling". Her "A" has become to mean Able instead of Adultery. She has lost care but has gained unity with society. She feels Pearl is the good outcome of this situation and wouldn't change it. She also feels Pearl is still too young to know the truth of anything. She feels she has done a womans job by keeping her mouth shut about Dimmesdale.

  5. Hester has changed alot over the last seven years, first of all she has changed in the way the rest of the community sees her. They are accepting her as a skilled needle worker and they are looking past the fact that she is an adulterer. Second she learning herself to live with the fact of what she did and starts to get over it.

  6. Hester has changed both physically and mentally throughout these 7 years. She seems to be more stern and hardened, but she has become very unselfish and kind as well. She now wears her hair under a hat, and seems to reject any other attractive part of her body by hiding it with her clothing. She seems to hate the fact that she is woman, and would prefer to forget it all together. Yet, in the community, she is more socially accepted. The Puritans now welcome Hester's company, and see her scarlet letter 'A' to mean 'able' instead of 'adulterer'. Hester sees Pearl as the only good thing to come out of the situation, event though she worries that Pearl will be as unsocially accepted as she once was by her behavior.

  7. Hester has become more active in the Puritan lifestyle. She is more accepted into their society because she conformed to fit what their standard of a "woman" is. Her "A" has come to mean "able". She has gained acceptance, but lost who she truly was along the way. Hester has now come to think of Peal like the rest of the townswomen do; like something is not quite right. By Hester's attitude, I seems to me she finds being a woman quite boring.

  8. Hester has become more nicer to society instead of being an outcast. She has lost alot of her feminine beauty. Many of the puritans see her as a very kind person now, almost saintly. Many also see her A as angel now.

  9. After 7 years Hester has become more active in the society of the Puritans, and is more welcomed by them. She has become a colder person though and not as nice and giving as before. The Scarlet Letter “A” has become to mean able instead of adulterer to the people in the community because of the work she does. Hester has lost the way that people use to see her before the “A” but has gained respect in the community. Hester feels that Pearl is a gift even though at times all she seems to do is cause trouble, and pain. Hester feels that she is true to herself in keeping the secret of who the other sinner was until Dimmesdale said it him self.

  10. After 7 years, Hester's A is no longer seen as meaning adulterer but instead as meaning able. It is seen this way because Hester does a lot of charity work such as bringing food to the sick. Hester still sees Pearl as an imp and she feels guilty for Pearl's lack of a place in society. I feel as though Hester is proud of herself for surviving such a tough time and that she thinks of herself as a very strong woman

  11. The "A" representing adultery is now seen as able. Hester has done a lot of work for the poor townspeople such as making them clothes and bringing them food in the past 7 years. She has gained more respect from the others because they have seen how nice of a person she can be. Hester loves Pearl but she worries for her future. Hester is a very strong woman and is proud of making it through these tough times. But, sometimes she starts to doubt herself and starts to feel bad about the sin she has committed.

  12. Hester’s role in society has become more open. However, she still ignores the townspeople’s gossip, whether it is praise or criticism. Hester has also become more speculative. She feels like something is missing in Pearl’s life and blames herself for Pearl being rejected by the other children in the society. Hester believes that there will always be some sort of obstacle blocking women from assuming a “fair and suitable position”. Due to Hester’s strength and service to the community, her “A” has come to represent “Able”. Hester has lost her outward beauty but has gained the community’s respect and praise.

  13. Hester becomes aware of her sin and starts to partake in various works of charity and different acts of kindness for the less fortunate. The townspeople start to see the "A" as a symbol standing for "able" instead of "adultery" because she is able to assist the sick whenever needed. She lost her passion and womanhood, but she gained strength of character. Pearl is treated with much love from her mother, but Hester also feels guilty about the future of her daughter and how her sin is and will affect her.

  14. Hester has become much more active in the community. She helps the sick and the poor by bringing them food and aiding to their needs. She is still a large topic of discussion, however the townspeople have started to interpret the "A" as meaning "Able" rather than "Adulterer". Hester has lost her beauty and her kind presence through the years, she has become rather cold and secluded. She has become somewhat speculative about something being seriously wrong with Pearl and she has started to become more concerned for what harm she is causing Dimmesdale by not telling him Chillingworth's identity.

  15. Hester's A is no longer seen as meaning adulterer but instead as meaning able because she does a lot of charity work such as bringing food to the ill. Although Hester still sees her little girl,Pearl, as an imp and feels guilty for Pearl's lack of a place in society. I feel as though Hester feels accomplished for surviving such a tough time and such torture. Also I believe that she thinks of herself as a strong independent woman.

  16. Hester has changed a lot over the 7 years that have gone by. She is more active in the community, she nurses the sick, and makes very nice pieces for everyone. Hester is also no longer seen as a person who committed adultery but as a person who is able to do a lot of things. The letter A means something much more different than what it started out to mean. She has become more observant of Pearl and wants her to be the normal woman in the community.

  17. TylerW7 Hester is not hated as much in the town, however she is still ashamed from the scarlet letter. She loves Pearl still and she wants to be considered a woman.

  18. After these seven years, Hester has slowly lost her soft feminine touch. She never fights public opinion, instead she submits to them. She gives much charity to the needy and just lives for her and Pearl’s survival, not seeming to want anything. The townspeople have come to see the A as for “Able”, but to her, it is a constant reminder of shame and her sin and it “had not done its office”. Hester has lost the loveliness of her face, becoming sterner and hardened. She is scared for Pearl’s character and attitudes.

  19. Hester changed throughout those 7 years by not letting the Scarlet letter take over her life. She's decided to do things her own way whether people look down on her or not. Her "A" that used to mean Adulterer is now known as Able. She has always loved Pearl ever since she was born and I'm sure she always will. She has gained the trust of her society but lost to Chillingworth by keeping his identity hidden.

  20. Hester has become more involved with the community. People seem to believe that the "A" now represents "Able", not "Adultery" because of all the good accomplishments she has made. Hester has lost her beauty but has gained some self respect. She is still worried if Pearl has a touch of evil in her and if she will ever be accepted. She still feels like a woman because deep down she is still in love with Dimmesdale.

  21. Hester has changed over 7 years because she cares about the people more, she's doing more charity work and helping out the ill. Due to all this charity work the people of the town look at the scarlet letter and change its meaning to "able" instead of "adultery". unfortunatley with all this work, she has lost some of her shine, but she gains more love for pearl.

  22. Hester is now more active in society after seven years of having the letter. She starts to nurse the illand she also knits for people. Now that she is starting to become less frowned upon in the society people don't look at the "A" on her chest as adultery but instead they look at it as saying "able." Hester has lost her true beauty over the seven years but has gained mental strength from the anger she held in while the people of the town criticized her for the longest time. She feels sorry for Pearl cause she doesn't want Pearl to be affected by her actions of adultery. Finally, she also still feels feminine because there is still a soft spot in her heart for Dimmesdale.

  23. In the past seven years Hester has changed dramatically. She has become involved in society; even though there is some that don’t agree with this. The “A” has turned into what the town believes to mean able than adulter. She does so much to help others and especially to raise her daughter. By keeping the father a secret to all, it makes her wonder what if, and that Pearl grows up without a father that’s truly close to her. Hester is proud about herself and being a women, especially proud about Pearl and how she is turning out.

With this, the "A" has come to mean able. She has lost the negative opinions of her and gained the respect of many within the community. They respect her. Hester still loves Pearl but worries about the consequences of being raised with a woman who used to be hated and despised. Although, she has lost her womanhood. It was the price to pay for part of the respect that she gained. Here face has become hard and she hides her hair, the symbol for femininity.

When the townspeople look at her now they think of the "A" as meaning "able" they are proud to have her in their town. 51. Hester has become very active in society, she tends to the poor, sick, and needy. And in doing these good deeds she does not take anything in return. The "A" on her chest that once stood for adulterer has now taken on the symbol of able. Hester feels that Pearl is somehow missing something and that Pearl is still very connected to the Scarlet Letter in certain ways. She has lost some of that grace and beauty since all of this has happened but that does not change the way she feels about Pearl.

If anyone is in trouble or needs help, people can count on her to aid them. The scorn that she has gotten from having wore the scarlet letter "A" has changed from meaning the one who committed adultery to meaning "Able". Hester is not longer soft and passionate but now she is rough and harsh. She also has come to apprieciate Pearl more and knows that she grow to become a good woman and stay out of trouble, hoping that her actions wont have affected Pearl's reputation. The womanhood has been lost but respect has been gained and she still knows that she has strong feelings.

Through everything she's gone through, she's lost her beauty, but she's gained pride and understanding and I think it's made her become a better person. She doesn't regret Pearl and loves her more than anything. Because of everything she's been through, and the pride she's gained, Hester feels more proud and strong about being a woman. Even her looks and beauty have gone downhill, she has gained inner strength. People have accepted her more in society, rather than her being the outcast. The A that she wears is still frowned upon, its not looked at as much because of how much she has changed.
