A Celestial Occurence!

Describe the 2nd scaffold scene in terms of the changed relationship of the four people. What does the scarlet meteor signify?

  1. In this scene, Dimmesdale screams because is of the pain is his breast and no one heard him. After that people start walking by. Mr. Wilson walks by him, coming from the deathbed of Governor Winthrop. Then, Hester and Pearl come from seeing Winthrop. Lastly, Chillingworth sees all three of them on the scaffold and Pearl points him out saying he's evil. Winthrop’s death and Dimmesdale’s guilt are jointly marked by the meteor’s “A”- shaped path. To faithful Puritans, signs, particularly natural ones, were of the utmost importance, and were read as symbols of divine will.

  2. The meteor signifies an "A" shaped path that everyone believes means angel. Before the meteor Dimmesdale shrieks and nobody hears it. The shriek was from a sharp pain in his chest from engraving an "A" on it, the one Chillingworth found earlier on his chest. Hester and Pearl join Dimmesdale on the scaffold and Chillingworth glances at them. Pearl looks at him and points him out as an evil sinning man.

  3. The second scaffold scene is magical, but at the same time pathetic. Dimmesdale deliriously walks up on the scaffold, then he is joined but Hester and Pearl and they three hold hands, making it seem like things will turn out alright. Then the "A" meteor struck across the sky! Hester and Dimmesdale believe it means adulterer when the rest of the town think it stands for angel because Winthrop died. Then Chillingworth appear making it awkward, then Chillingworth and Dimmesdale go away.

  4. The second scaffold scene describes how the relationship of all four characters will be at the end of the book. Dimmesdale stands with Hester and Pearl upon the scaffold, together, in front of a nonexistent audience. Chillingworth watches from afar, and is now plotting against Dimmesdale, loathing him for sleeping with Hester. A meteor crosses the sky and seems to form the letter A. When the Puritans see this event, they mistake it as a symbol for the angel of Governor Withdrop who had passed that night. But the four main characters know that the A really stands for the word adultery.

  5. In the second scaffold scene, Dimmesdale is doing what he should have originally done, stood with Hester and pearl in their shame. Hester has changed because she is less prideful. Pearl, grown older and wise beyond her years. Dimmesdale feels so guilty he can hardly live, he is withering away instead of just standing by while Hester was ridiculed. And Chillingworth has now become vengeful and crude instead of curious. The scarlet meteor "A" is believed to mean "Angel" as Governor Winthrop's soul ascended into the heavens. It really signified Dimmesdale admitting his guilt.

  6. This scene is showing how Dimmesdale is becoming desperate and needs to tell someone of his sins. Then Hester comes along and they both stand together on the scaffold. Something Dimmesdale should have done in the beginning. Then the A shows in the sky. Many townspeople think it means angel. However it really means adulterer.

  7. This scene is when Dimmesdale wants’ to confess his sin so badly he decides to climb up on the scaffold, but screams for the pain. When he does this Mistress Hibbins is the only one who see's him even though Mr. Wilson walks right by him. When Dimmesdale see's Hester and pearl coming from Governor Winthrop death bed he asked them to join him, this is when Pearl see's Chillingworth and calls him evil. The A in the sky is meant to be adulterer but the townspeople think it signifies a angel.

  8. In this scene Dimmesdale is being tortured by his guilty conscience. Out of shame and desperation he finds himself on the scaffold of sin, wanting greatly to confess the burden of his sin. Hester and Pearl just so happened to be walking home when they see Dimmesdale. This is the first scene where we see the three characters together alone as a family. The "A" is seen in the sky representing the A on Hester's chest, standing for adultery. Although the rest of the town sees it as an A for "angel" since the beloved Governor Winthrop has just passed away. But then Chillingworth interrupts the moment and persuades Dimmesdale to leave his family and go home with the evil doctor.

  10. The 2nd scaffold scene happens because Dimmesdale feels guilty about not confessing his sin. So, he goes and stand on the scaffold, however he does it at night so no one really sees him. While he is standing there he sees Hester and Pearl and asks them to stand with him. During this scene, they are together as a family, but then Chillingwoth comes and takes Dimmesdale away. Dimmesdale, Hester and Pearl's relationship grows stronger while Dimmesdale and Chillingworth's grows weaker. The A in the sky the people interpret to mean as A for angel, even though it means adulterer because Dimmesdale is an adulterer.

  11. Dimmesdale is still getting weaker with the presence of sin on his heart. He goes to the scaffold at night hoping people would find him there. Soon, Hester and Pearl did. All three of them stood there together as a family. There was a meteor that produced an "A" shaped path. The townspeople all think this represents "angel" since Governor Winthrop passed away. However, Dimmesdale knows it stands for adultery. Then Chillingworth comes to the scaffold and sees them all up there together and persuades Dimmesdale to go back with him.

  12. By the time the second scaffold scene occurs, the relationships between Hester, Pearl, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth have taken a drastic twist. Dimmesdale has become extremely weak and blinded by his inner guilt. He loves Hester and Pearl but does not possess the courage to be seen with them. Pearl is extremely insightful and pleas with Dimmesdale to stand with her and her mother “tomorrow at noontide.” (Chapter 12, Page 118) Hester is shown to still care deeply about Dimmesdale but remembers her oath to Chillingworth and does not tell Dimmesdale his true identity, even after Dimmesdale states that he is afraid of him and begs her to tell Dimmesdale if she knows the mysterious physician. Chillingworth has turned extremely demonic and has vowed to get revenge on Dimmesdale. Pearl realizes the evil spirit in Chillingworth. The scarlet “A”-shaped meteor represents the word “Angel.” However, Dimmesdale and Hester relate it to their sin of adultery.

  13. At the beginning of the second scaffold scene, Dimmesdale screams in pain while clutching his cheat due to the hidden "A" under his shirt. Many people start to walk by the scaffold while Dimmesdale is on it. These people include Mr.Wilson who walked by first after leaving Governer Winthrop's deathbed, however he didn't notice Dimmesdale. Next came Pearl and Hester who were coming from the same place, and the joined Dimmesdale on the scaffold for a while. The last person to walk by was Chillingworth, who Pearl pointed at and declared was evil. The meteor with the "A" on it clearly symbolizes Hester and Dimmesdale's joint sin, however the townspeople see it as standing for "Angel", symbolizing Governer Winthrop's assent into heaven.

  14. Dimmesdale wants to confess his sin. He decides to climb up on the scaffold, but he screams for the pain noone came out because they thought it was a witch. Although Mistress Hibbins is the only one who see's him, even though Mr. Wilson walks right past him. 16. TylerW7 This scene is when Dimmesdale hopes to confess his sin so he decides to get on the scaffold, and the pain makes him scream. Once this is done, Mistress Hibbins is the only one who sees him. When Dimmesdale finds Hester and pearl coming he asked them to join him, that was when Pearl saw Chillingworth and called him evil. Then the "A" in the sky represents adulteror but they think it means angel.

  17. In the second scaffold scene, Dimmesdale goes up to the scaffold where he cries for his remorse and sins. Hester and Pearl join Dimmesdale where they join him in his pain and troubles. Hester and Dimmesdale’s connection is awakened which leads them to take certain actions later on in the book. The fact that Chillingworth finds them all in the scaffold is an allusion to when he came to Boston and found out about their sin. This shows how he is rather a stranger looking in their relationship. The scarlet meteor signifies that now that Dimmesdale and Hester’s sin is unified, it will shoot like a meteor into public.

  18. Dimmesdale finally realizes his wrong doing in the first part of the book and this time decides he should share his sin and guilt with Hester on the scaffold. Hester is still deeply in love with Dimmesdale but due to the deal she made to Chillingworth she can't reveal his true identity. Pearl, who's now 7 and is advanced well beyond her years can sense an evil aura coming from Chillingworth and when she's on the scaffold she points at him saying he's an evil man. Everyone thought the "A" on the meteor ment Angel because of Governer Winthrop's death and they all thought he had ascended to heaven. However, Hester and Dimmesdale believe it represents Adulteror.

  19. Dimmesdale wants to reveal his sin to everyone, but he can't seem to find the courage to do so and screams in pain. Dimmesdale wants to see how it would be to stand on the scaffold and reveal his hidden "A". The first person to walk by is Mr. Wilson, who was coming from Winthrop's deathbed and he doesn't seem to notice him. Then Hester and Pearl walk by and notice him standing on the scaffold and join him. Pearl realizes that Dimmesdale is her father and the three of them start to form a family bond while holding hands. Then Chillingworth shows up and he now has confirmation that Hester commited adultery with Dimmesdale. Pearl sees him and points out that he's evil. The "A" stands for Angel but Hester and Dimmesdale seem to believe it stands for Adultery.

  20. Dimmesdale knows that he is guilty for what he has done. So going on the scaffold is a way of confessing. And then Hester and Pearl walk by a while later and see him and they join him and hold hands as if nothing bad has happened. People think that the scarlet meteor stands for "angel" because Winthrop had just pasted away. Hester and Dimmesdale thought it meant adultery. Chillingworth came by and he ruined the party and made Dimmesdale leave with him.

  21. While on the scaffold a meteor passes over the heads of the three on the scaffold symoblizing adultery, but everybody else in the town symbolizes it as an angel. The reason for why Dimmesdale is at the scaffold is because he feels guilty and sorrowful for his sin and tries to omit it. Hester and Pearl notice him on the scaffold and join in with him. Chillingworth interupts their meeting and forces Dimmesdale to join him.

  25. This scaffold scene kind of weird. Dimmesdale goes up on the scaffold then Hester and Pearl join him and they hold hands. Then a meteor is seen flying across the sky. The town think the A stands for angel because Winthrop died, but Dimmesdale and Hester believe it stands for adulterer. When Chillingworth appears things get weird, then Dimesdale and Chillingworth leave.

  26. The 2nd scaffold scene describes the changed relationship well. Dimmesdale is now the sinful one, standing on the scaffold. Hester and Pearl can now sympathize with Dimmesdale, helping him in his time of need. Chillingworth is now casted in a darker light, plotting the end of the poor man. Though the "A" in the sky represents Angel to many people, the "A" truly signifies the sin that both Hester and Dimmesdale has committed.

Then Chillingworth comes and accuses Hester committing adultery with Dimmesdale, even though the people think her 'A' stands for angel.

  29. The second scafold is different because Dimmesdale is also on the scaffold with Hester and Pearl. Dimmesdale is full of guilt and is growning weak and very sick because of it. Hester has changed because she has less pride. Pearl is older and more aware, she asks Dimmesdale to join them in public but he just says on judgment day. Also Chillingworth is vengeful and is seeking revenge. He is turning evil. The "A" in the sky the people think stand for angel but really Dimmesdale sees it of another addition to his guilt.

  30. After Dimmesdale slowly makes his way onto the scaffold, he lets out a painfilled shriek which escapes unnoticed. Hester and Pearl were walking home, when they spot him. They join him upon the scaffold when the Meteor strikes an "A" shaped trail across the sky which the citizens think stands for Angel, in place of Winthrops death. While Hester and Dimmesdale see as Adulturer in place of their actions.

As the people of the town began to leave he screams out and calls Hester and Pearl to the Scaffold where he will begin his confession showing the people the letter "A" that he has engraved in to his chest in his guilt. After his death just moments later the people took the meaning of the letter "A" not as adultery but as angle. But we all know the true meaning as his confession of his sin that he committed with Heseter.
