Gossip at its Worst!

Many of the townspeople seem to take active, vicious pleasure in gossiping about and scoffing at Hester Prynne, but eventually, a lot of the townsfolk come to like Hester. What role does gossip play in developing Hester’s character? Why are the characters in this novel so judgmental?

  1. The role that gossips plays in developing Hester's character shows that she doesn't care nor listen to what other people say. She knows what she did was wrong but she's not guilty for what she did. Initially, the gossip makes her character stronger and shes lives her life doing needlework and dressing dead bodies. The characters in this novel are judgemental because whenever something excitng happens in their town, they gossip and make it exciting by talking horribly about the person being tormented even though their lives aren't perfect either.

  2. Hester doesn't care what the town folks think of her. She cares less what they think. What she did is wrong, but it is not for the people to decide. She loves the father and she loves her baby. Yes, the people are judgmental towards her. They don't show their goodness by gossiping about her. They don't realize what they are doing.

  3. The gossip that the towns say about Hester only makes her stronger, because it plays a role in developing Hester by making her stronger and being able to ignore them, and the comments they say about her. This shows that she does not feel bad for what she has done but diffidently realizes she had done something wrong. The characters in this novel are judgmental because not a lot happiness in the town. Also they believe that the punishment for Hester was not good enough, and she should have been sentenced to death.

  4. The gossip in the story helps make Hester stronger and enables her to become the better woman and not sully herself by feeling bad over what people say about her. Without the gossip, Hester would not have grown to be the strong woman she is in the book right now. The people in the novel are judgmental because they are Puritans, they are unhappy with their own lives, and they are jealous over Hester's beauty. Also, the people in the town are so judgmental because it is a small town so whenever anything happens then everyone knows about it and they want to gossip about it because it is something new.

  5. The role that gossip plays in developing her character shows how strong of a person Hester was. She truly didn't care what the townspeople were saying about her, even when she was basically being exiled from the world. She started developing her good name back by doing excellent needlework for people. She would sew garments for some of the most prestigious people in the town. The townspeople are so judgemental because this is their only real form of entertainment, they didn't have a lot of things to keep them busy so when a scandal occurs it creates chaos.

  6. The gossip going around town only improves her self esteem because she doesn't care what they think about her. She knows that she is a good person and everybody is just overreacting. The townspeople are so judgemental because they don't really have people commit sins like that.

  8. All the gossip helps Hester by improving her image. Making her look like she is a very kind hearted person who has unwavering gentleness. She asks for nothing in return. When there was bad gossip going around she ignored it all. Now there is good gossip and she still ignores it. This shows how true of character Hester is. The townspeople are judgemental because she is a very popular person.

  9. The role gossip plays is showing the reader more character traits about Hester due to the way she reacts to them. She exiled herself from the rest and didn’t care that she was the talk of the townspeople. She knew deep down she has learned from her sin and indeed a good person. The people of the town are so judgmental because its things like what Hester did that they rarely ever see.

  10. In my opinion, Hawthorne shows his belief of Puritan hypocrisy by showing that Puritans were overly judgmental of people that they did not even know. The town, before they actually took time to get to know more about Hester’s traits, judged her punishment as very subtle, believing that her rightful punishment should be death. Once they actually take time to know her, however, they begin to discover that she actually is a nice, generous person. In addition, when any newcomers inquire of the scarlet letter Hester is wearing, the townsfolk say that it stands for Able. The gossip in the story also has the function of showing Hester’s characteristics. While Dimmesdale refuses to tell anyone that he is the other adulterer, due to his fear of losing his reputation because of the town gossip’s overemphasis on flaws, Hester proves to be a morally strong woman who can stand up for herself and know who she truly is. Despite this strength, she “never battled with the public, but submitted uncomplainingly, to its worst usage...” (Chapter 13, Page 123) In addition, she proves to be a trustworthy mother and lover by tending to Pearl’s needs to the best of her ability and doing everything in her power to protect Dimmesdale, including deciding to reveal Chillingworth’s true identity to Dimmesdale, no matter how much pain it may cause her personally.

  11. From the beginning of the story we have learned that Hester does not care about what the other townspeople think. Instead of their hateful words tearing her down, they make her stronger. Hester does not feel bad for the sin she has committed but knows it was wrong. Throughout the book we see that the townspeople realize that Hester is actually a nice and caring person. The characters are so judgmental because they are Puritans and the women become jealous of her beauty, and jealousy gets the best of them. Living in a small town with very few people also gets them talking because everyone knows each other and nothing too exciting goes on there.

  12. The women in this novel gossip possibly because they are bored, jealous, and/or they were raised to. Well, the horrible fact is, even i like to talk. Have you ever seen a pregnant girl at school and asked the people around you how old she was? I know i have. Who wouldn't? Someone completly not curious. The townspeople have nothing better to do than be curious! Hester, I believe is shaped to feel shamful constantly because of the townspeople's curiosity. It makes her maybe more religious, but also more judgmental. -Ann H1

  13. All the ridicule that the townspeople did to Hester, I believe made the impact of making her live by herself and doing what she could to survive. Also she started doing some charity work, which in the communities eyes looks good. The characters in this novel are so judgemental because first of all there religious views are so strict, everything has to be done right. Also they are so judgemental because they see this BEAUTIFUL young woman that screwed up, they are not beautiful and feel like this is their chance to be over Hester.

  14. I think that the role of gossip just spreads hesters adultery and have more people insulting her and being rude. It reminds her of the past and just hurts her inside. The rumors don't stop they talk of taking pearl away over rumors its just ridiculous. Although they have this bad effect i think it makes her a stronger women. She doesnt care what they think and becomes a stronger person for it.

  15. At first the gossip of the townspeople ruined Hester's name in the town. But Hester did not let them bother him she knew how wrong the sin she committed was and did good deeds so she could feel better about herself. Her good deeds were noticed by the people and they gossiped about her again and it helped her build back up her name in the community to someone respectful. Hester is strong and does not let the gossip of the towns people affect her in any way. She lives her life only worried about her and little Pearl she does not care what anyone else thinks of her.

  16. At first you would think that all of the gossiping would hurt Hester, but it never did. The role of gossip made Hester stronger because she didn't care what people would say about her. Hester becomes more liked when she starts doing needlework for much of the townspeople. I think that people in this book are so judgemental because they really don't have anything better to do than to gossip about the scandals that happen.

  17. Gossiping about Hester helps to improve her image. All the rumors and harsh words that she has heard just makes her look like an A class woman. She knows what she did is wrong which is why she accepts the punishment. The characters are so judgemental because they want to get on Hester because she is so beautiful. The other wives are just big country women.

  18. Although it seems that Hester is untouched by the gossip throughout the town in which she says she doesn't care about, I believe it does affect her personality over time. At the start of the book, Hester was warm and passionate. Over time however, we have come to find Hester has less care for everything in life besides Pearl, and she is a more stern woman. The reason for all the gossip is partly prejudice, becuase Hester has sinned, and also punishment for her sin. The people were unhappy with Hesters slighted sentence and reffered to bashing her with their words to make up for, in their minds, Hester's lack of punishment.

  19. The townspeople gossip about Hester because she has sinned and has been caught and punished for it. They think that they are purer than her because their sins have never been made public and therefore feel the right to share their disgust with others like themselves. At the beginning of the book, Hester rebelled against the gossip by haughtily embroidering the scarlet letter. She seemed unaffected by the society's criticism. Later on it becomes difficult to ignore and hardens her personality.

  20. Gossip plays a huge role in the development of Hester Prynne's character. The gossip the townspeople spread about her just make Hester stronger and more ignorant of them. At first the people of the town didn't appreciate Hester one bit, but once she showed off her fancy needlework and sewing abilities she gained respect from the townspeople. The characters in this novel are so judgmental because they feel like the bigger man if they point out the flaws in others just like how Hester committed adultery.

  21. Gossip plays an extremely important role in the development of Hester's character. Hester character only becomes stronger because she has learned how to ignore the criticism she recieves from the townspeople. The characters in this novel (mainly the women) are so judgmental because they are jealous of the beauty that Hester possess and it also makes them feel better about themselves when they belittle others.

  22. Gossip is a very important aspect of Hesters character. She is judged very crucially because in those times adultry was a very serious crime that usually resulted in execution. I believe she is such a shady character due to all of the gossip going around town. TylerW7

  23. The towns people gossip they have nothing better to do then talk about someone that has done something wrong,it makes them look better and there status goes up for talking about Hester. But after they got to know her a little more the turn out to like her,she is such a strong woman, being able to ignore the peoples harsh remarks in the town is something that is really hard to do.

  24. The towns people gossip a lot about Hester, however it does not bother her. She is not ashamed of what she did, even though adultery was a serious crime in that time. The women of the town are especially judgmental because Hester is a more beautiful then norm lady and they do not know who she committed her crime with.

  25. the towns people gossip because it seems to be how they were raised also they think it's important while it isn't. the gossip hurts Hester reminding her about her sin and hurting her which just makes her stronger.

  26. Gossip plays a big role in developing and changing Hester's character. After years of being spoken ill about and ridiculed, she's learned to just ignore it. But she still suffers a great deal from it. I think the characters in the novel(mainly the women) are so judgmental because they're jealous of Hester's beauty and because they don't know her.

  27. The role that gossip has on Hester's character, is that she is a stronger women for not giving into their criticism. She doesn't care what the people are saying about her, she just goes on living her life. The characters are judgemental, because they are jealous of her, and have nothing better to do.

  28. I think that the gossip only makes her stronger and shows that it doesnt effect her. The towns people are very judgemental and i think its because they are not used to having this sin commited. Also the women are very jealous because they see how beautiful and content she is.

  29. The role of gossip in Hester's life is huge. This is because in the time period, this was a small population of puritans. In a small town, word spreads quickly and reputations are easily soiled. However, Hester does her best to come through the gossip and not give into the biting criticism. I think one main reason many of the women in the town are so judgemental of Hester is because they are jealous of her beauty.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gossip is a major issue in not only in today's time, but also in the Puritan time. In this case it ultimately makes Hester a stronger character. Instead of taking all the other women say to heart, she does not listen to it. The more they critisize the stronger and more independent she becomes. They are so judgmental because they are jealous of her. She is beautiful and passionate, unlike many of the other women in the town.

  31. The towns people gossip because of the pressures of their religion. The rules that they have make it so that if any one does wrong it will ruin them. With the rules that they have it does not propose exciting things to talk about. Without anything to positive to dwell on they must dwell on negative things.

  32. The gossip in the novel only makes Hester stronger. She doesn't care what people say or think about her. She knows what she did wrong and has accepted herself. The townspeople are so judgemental because they are not used to this crime being commited. The women of the town are also very jealous of Hester.

  33. Gossip actually helped Hester develop the determination that would help her become stronger. This strength would play a major role in the decisions that she would make as events evolved around her. I think that the characters in the novel are judgmental due to several reasons. One is jealousy. Hester has better looks than many of the women in the town. Another reason is hate of her sin. They look down upon her whenever they see the gilded letter and shun her accordingly. The rumors may be a result of this hate.

  34. The role that gossip plays in Hester’s character helps her develop into a better person. She learns not to listen to them and to think about her daughter and the punishment that she thinks she deserves. She knows that she is a good person, and people have to have something to do so they gossip. The characters are so judgmental in this novel because most people are normal and don’t go to prison every day. It’s not something they see every day so it gives them something to talk about.

  35. The gossip that takes place makes Hester stronger, and at the same time, makes her want God's forgiveness even more. The reason people in the town gossip, is because it is the equivalen to reality TV back then; it is basically their only form of entertainment. It is exciting, and it makes them feel better about themselves while putting someone else down.

  36. The gossiping about Hester throughout the book builds her character and shows how strong she is. The townspeople only seem to critize her because she is beautiful and many of the women are jealous of her appearance.

  37. The towns people gossip a lot about Hester, but this only makes her character stronger. Hester understands what she did was wrong, but she also realizes whats done cannot be changed. The people in the town gossip about her even though their lives are not perfect either. It takes the attention off of there wrongs.

  38. The gossiping aboout hester in the town makes her look like a stronger person. She doesnt seem to care because out of that sin, she got the most important thing in her life out of it, which is Pearl. The people that gossip in the town only do it because they are tought to do that to people who sin, but they are also sinning themselves by doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Because the townspeople gossip so much about Hester, in the end it only makes her stronger. It also helps her with teaching Pearl how to deal with the gossip. The main reason the women gossip about her is because she is beautiful and as we saw in the movie they are not attractive. So they are jealous of her even if she did things wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  40. All of the gossip throughout the story so far has created a stronger character for Hester and has made her have more determination. She now feels herself making better decisions and knows to believe what is the truth not what others believe. Because of her change in attitude, each little thing that someones calls her or thinks of her, really makes her stronger on the inside since she knows that she is not what they say and she is independant with herself. The townspeople are very judgemental because no one ever really sees anything like that happen so their feelings are extreme. They feel the need to share their weird feelings and express emotion through gossip and critizing others to make themselves feel better.

  41. GosSip plays a vital role in this book. The rownspeole gossip about Hester because hlshe committed adultry and the thin she is a very bad person. They seem too gossip about her because of the beauty she has but most of them lack as well.

  42. The gossip in the story, I think, is a lot like gossip in real life. When girls, mostly, hear someone gossiping about them, they can either look the other way or cause drama out of it. By looking the other way and choosing to ignore it because they know it's just lies, it really does make them a stronger person. They can go on living their lives as they please and as they feel is right because it doesn't matter what other people think of them if it isn't true. That's how I see it for Hester. The townspeople judge her so critically and harshly that she eventually sees there is no point in listening to them if it isn't true. By doing so, she appears and feels stronger. This, naturally, makes the gossipers feel weaker because the only reason they do it is to bring Hester down. It's a vicious cycle, really. But it's not a difficult one to break.

  43. With all the gossip going around the whole town, there's really nothing Hester can do about it and she realizes this and takes these people's comments and uses them to her advantage to become a much stronger person. It seems like the townspeople just gossip so much because they can. As soon as someone commits a sin, it's like a new exciting story to talk about, so they keep talking about other people's sins to keep the excitement in the town alive.

  44. For a long time after Hester's sentencing the townspeople dwell on the fact that she committed adultery and refuse to accept his within there community. As a result they engage in vicious gossip to lower her self-esteem and position in society. Eventually they come to like her because she has accepted her punishment and has amazing sewing skills. All the gossip has proved to build Hester's character and strengthen her will.

  45. Hawthorn uses this jelousy and gossip to show the hypocracy in the lives of the puritans. He also uses the developement of Hesters character to show that they were also mistaken in their judgemental nature.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The townspeople would criticize her and judge her because she wasn’t a puritan, she committed adultery and she couldn’t be killed because she wasn’t a puritan. The woman of the town would definitely judge her by saying things about her simply because she was pretty and they weren’t. Some of the things probably made her stronger and more independent. But after a while the townspeople would ease their criticism and start liking her because she wasn’t so different from the rest of the people other than the fact that she's prettier then every woman there. But she would do charity and stand on the scaffold everyday so people respected her for that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Gossip plays a vital role in the the book because it one shows the hypocrisy in the Puritan religion along with it strengthen Hester herself. The towns people use gossip to entertain themselves but can also strengthen ones character at the same time. The town begins to take to Hester as she begins to do all these charitable deeds, but character can be so judgmental due to there beliefs because they believe everyone should act the way they are told to in society with no exceptions so when someone acts out of line its the talk of the town.

  48. Gossip plays a major role in this novel. You can tell this is so because of what the town’s people put Hester through, with all the judgments and criticism they practically ambushed her for a mistake that could have happened to anyone. I also believe that this makes her stronger as a person and more defiant to what people think of her. Because truly it is what she thinks of herself that matters. In addition, she stays true to herself without blaming anyone else for her own mistake. However, I think that the townspeople in this novel are so judge-mental because they can’t find any pleasure in their own life and need someone’s else’s mistake to talk about other than their own.

  49. Gossip plays a large role in developing Hester’s character. The hurtful and judgmental comments from the towns’ people make Hester stronger and more resilient. She knows what she did was wrong but she accepts it and decides not to care about what people think. The towns’ people are judgmental because in the protestant society this is a horrible sin. Even today something like what happened to Hester would cause a stir and wave of gossiping in a religious group.

  50. Gossip plays a large role in the development of Hester as a character. It shows that through anything, Hester keeps her head held up high, and doesnt let the comments of others effect her, or her family. She knows her actions, and she is trying to fix them each day.I believe that the townspeople talk so much gossip about this one situation because they are used to the same basic routine day in and day out in their small town.

    ReplyDelete
  51. In the puritan society, the people are fickle. They are easily influenced by what is said in their society. Gossip plays a huge role in the novel. Instead of destroying the live of Hester, it improves it and makes it stronger. She does not think what she did was wrong. The characters are so judgmental because this is the one thing that entertains their lives. Also some people do not want to feel left out if they do not tell the gossip or spread it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. In this point in time gossip is very important in Hester's life. She uses the gossip as a away of embracing the rumors of the townspeople and using them to her advantage as a sign of pride, instead of embarassment. In the puritan time, gossip was very important, whic explains why the village people were so judgementals. The life of a purtitan people was very dry and judging people and creating stories was a very entertaining thing to do at the time.

  53. The town likes to gossip about Hester for a few reasons. One reason they are so judgmental is because they are jealous of her beauty. She is supposed to be punished from wearing the scarlet letter but it doesn't seem to bother her. Instead she acts proud and continues to live her life not caring what others think. The scarlet letter has also made her do things for people around the community. She wanted to make up for her wrongdoing. When people saw that Hester was doing good things it made her look like a better person and people came to like her more and talk about her in a good way instead of bad.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The gossip of the townspeople enables Hester to show her pride and become a stronger person who ignores the judgement of her peers. The characters in the book are so judgemental because in truth they are all sinners and hypocrites and feel that by exposing others' sins, their sins are voided, and they are better people for showing other peoples sins.

  55. All the town gossip feeds Hester's strength. Everything they talk only helps her overcome it all. She knows she is guilty but does not regret anything that has happened. The townspeople are so judgemental because everyone either lied before, made a poor choice, or made a mistake. There is no doubt in my mind. I think that what one gossiper says leads the whole town to believe it.

  56. Gossip plays an enormous role in Hesters character because she learns not to listen to the bad things people have to say. She knows her own, good, character and that's all that really matters. It sets her above the other towns people. The characters are so judgemental because they live in a "perfect" society so they cut down others who aren't in their view of perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  57. All the ridicule the town gave to Hester made her decide to live by herself and doing what she needed to to survive. She also started to do good things that the people in town saw as goodness. The characters in this novel criticize because there religion is so strict. Another reason they criticize her is because they see this good women had made a mistake, and they don't feel good for judging her.

  58. A lot of people gossip because sin that big is uncommon in their days. Religion plays a huge role with gossip because they are very religious. Her confidence all so plays a role in gossip.
