  3. Upon seeing the letter “A” burned onto Dimmesdale’s heart, Chillingworth discovers that Dimmesdale is Pearl’s father. Due to Chillingworth’s desire to get revenge on Dimmesdale, Chillingworth has turned into a demonic parasite, thus leaving behind his reputation as a highly respected scholarly man. Meanwhile, Dimmesdale has become extremely weak, pale, and miserable due to his guilt as well as constantly being under Chillingworth’s surveillance. Dimmesdale’s and Chillingworth’s relationship is still strong, however, due to Dimmesdale’s inability to realize who his true enemy is. Due to the scarlet letter, Hester has lost her beauty and has become more speculative, often wondering what it means to be a Puritan woman. Chillingworth sins at this point of the story because he has devoted the rest of his days to getting vengeance on Dimmesdale and Hester by feeding at Dimmesdale’s spirit.

Dimmesdale is so lost in his own guilt that he doesn't realize what Chillingworth is really doing to him and lets him stay since he seems like a nice person that he can talk to. Dimmesdale has gotten weaker and has started to punish himself by fasting and being miserable. Hester realizes that this sin is having an affect on other people. She starts to take action by taking responsibility and wants to help Dimmesdale with his guilt. Chillingworth sins by this point because he is just searching for ways of revenge on Dimmesdale and leaves him suffering instead of helping him with his guilt.

When Chillingworth lifts of Dimmesdale's shirt, he uncovers and "A" on his chest, which affirms Chillingworth's belief that Dimmesdale is the father of Hester's child. Hawthorn would believe Chillingworth to be the chief sinner at this point, due to his unorthodox behavior towards Dimmesdales criminal secracy.

When Chillingworth discoverers the letter A branded on Dimmesdale's chest, he develops a more sinister appearance. As if he were playing a game of cat and mouse. Dimmesdale seems to detect this change and becomes more wary and a little fearful of Chillingworth. At this point Hester feels the need to tell Dimmesdale the truth about Chillingworth in order to 'save him'. I believe Chillingworth is the sinful character according to Hawthorne. He is punishing an already punished soul by increasing Dimmesdale torture to the extreme, giving Chillingworth a cruel demeanor.

  13. Dimmesdale starts to dislike Chillingworth and become more and more suspicious of him. Chillingworth reveals an "A" on Dimmesdale's chest while he is "out cold." 16. Dimmesdale and Chillingworth become hostile toward eachother. They could possibly be catching onto eachothers lies. I believe Chillingworth sees a scarlet letter on Dimmesdale's chest. That was the spark that lead to the mutual hostility. Chillingworth turns into a monster of revenge weaving up ways to get back at Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale begins to torture himself from the guilt. He also becomes dark and sullen. Hester, on the other hand, is now becoming well liked amongst the town and "learning" from her punishment. She realizes she has to comform to have a peaceful life. At this time, Chillingworth is the real sinner. He invaded Dimmesdale's privacy and planns to use what he learns agains him. He is the real evil of this story.

Dimmesdale's punishement weakend him, and Chillinworth became hostile towards him. Hester, on the other hand, is actually becoming a likable character to the Puritan community, as she seems to be learning from her punishment. I believe Chillingworth is the real evil in the story, for invading Dimmesdale's privacy.

  22. In chapters 11 and 12, Chillingworth is finally seen as the evil and wretched man that he really is. Although blinded by his ability to only see the good in people, Dimmesdale starts to figure out who Chillingworth really is. At first Dimmesdale tries to forget about and hide this feeling of hatred and disgust towards a man who he believes is only trying to help him and bring him into good health. When Chillingworth finds the "A" on Dimmesdale's chest he is just filled with more passion to seek revenge on the beloved priest. Chillingworth has been turning into an evil man who is only seeking revenge to fulfill his life. Dimmesdale has been weakening by the days that pass by and Hester has been losing her passion and happiness. The three characters are all overcome with a sense of sadness and misery. Chillingworth is committing the biggest sin in the story by seeking revenge and making a heart filled with good intentions miserable.

  25. The relationship between Chillingworth and Dimmesdale sours as Dimmesdale starts to have the feeling that Chillingworth isn't exactly as innocent as he implies himself to be. Dimmesdale realizes that Chillingworth isn't good, but essentially evil. This occurs as Chillingworth digs into the essential truths of Dimmesdale and Dimmesdale starts to break down, almost feeling terror at the sight of him and anger at his ideals, those that are essentially evil. When Dimmesdale collapses, Chillingworth actually finds an A on his chest. This is when Chillingworth truly goes too far and starts to analyze and dig into Dimmesdale to the point that he starts to break down in health and in mind. Dimmesdale succumbs to the pressures of Chillingworth. At this point, even with the A on his chest, Chillingworth is the one that is truly sinning. Chillingworth finds an "A" on Dimsdale's chest. Dimsdale is weak and pale because of his fasting, studying, and stress. Hester has lost her beauty, and has become more serious with her life. Chillinworth is now the sinner in the story, because Hester and Dimsdale knows they sinned, and are obviously remorceful, and he jsut wants this for his own personaly greed. He cares nothing about Dimsdale or Hester, just his revenge.

Dimmesdale's health has become much worse and he is slowly becoming delusional. Hester is becoming more worried about her daughter. In the eyes of Hawthorne, Chillingworth is commiting the ultimate sin by making Dimmesdale a slave in his own mind and soul.

Dimmesdale has become very guilty because it is finally getting to him what exactly has happened with Hester. And with Hester she has lost what she used to do so easily which is love people easily. I think that Chillingworth is the sinner because he is violating Dimmesdales trust, which in turn is violating his soul.

  33. Dimmesdale and Chillingworth have a relationship that can no longer be positively connected because suspision has arose. Chillingworth discovers an A on Dimmesdale's chest and this causes him to become bitter and evil. Dimmesdale believes that Chillingworth is up to no good. These intersecting thoughts cause chaos that destroys their relationship. Hester is more serious now and has lost some of her beauty. She also now takes responsibility for her actions. Chillingworth is definely the sinner at this point in the novel because he has sinned the most and tormented both Dimmesdale and Hester to the highest point so far which is just plain satanious.

Chillingworth has become more devilish and fiendish because of his belief in fate and his desire for revenge. Dimmesdale has become more self concious of his sin and Hester has lost most of her shame. Chillingworth is a big sinner because he ruins the soul of Dimmesdale on purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Dimmesdale and Chillingworth now do not like each other. Their relationship has become pretty mutually hostile, actually. When Chillingworth uncovers Dimmesdale's chest, he sees an "A" much like the one Hester has. Chillingworth is now driven by vengeance and Dimmesdale has become sickly and weak because his guilt has been destroying him. Hester has changed because she seems to have lost her beauty and her passion and seems to have begun to conform to her society, in order to show she has been learning from her sin, though she does not regret it still, and wants a peaceful and untroubling life. The real evil in the story at this point would have to be Chillingworth because all he wants is to out Dimmesdale on his secret with Hester and he won't stop until he's revealed everything.

  37. Dimmesdale and Chillingworths have turned to a more aggressive stand point between the two. But Chillingworth has found what he has been looking for upon Dimmesdales chest the letter "A". So now driven by revenge Chillingworth will do anything to torture dimmesdale. But Dimmesdale himself is committing self torture to himself by fasting, whippings, and lack of rest due to his quilt for committing the sin that he had done. And Hester on the other hand has changed for the better realizing what she has done, she tries to fit in the with the society and wants a more peacful and troubles life. 39. Dimmesdale’s and Chillingworth’s relationship is on loose ends when Chillingworth finds out of Dimmesdale’s “A” on his chest. This also changes their relationship since Chillingworth never knew that he was Hester’s accomplice. Dimmesdale had also had a change in appearance by becoming much thinner and paler, as well as changing his hobbies and devotion to preaching. Hester has also changed by becoming a stronger woman and accepting her mistakes and has become more motherly. In my opinion on Hawthorne’s view of sin, I believe that Chillingworth is the one who has truly sinned because he is trying to mess with Dimmesdale’s soul by trying to get him to confess.
